2009 in review: Animus

japanscene
Ahh another year comes to an end. Another year filled with animus, another year wasted watching them. So how WAS the animus this year? Well I would say so – so. Other than the generic harem/fighting/mecha animu, there are some gems that were worth watching up till the end. And it was quite a good thing, as I don’t really have time to watch every anime that is released out there, compared to other people :(

Kouji Taguchi Talks About Animes, Square Enix, And Profit

square-enix-logo-2
An interesting read of an interview by Kouji Taguchi, who is in charge of the company’s planning and producing animes. Interview via Business Media Makoto, translation from ANN

Producer Kouji Taguchi (Fullmetal Alchemist, Soul Eater, Kuroshitsuji, Saki) of the publishing company Square Enix discussed his experiences in making anime at the Gekiteki 3-Jikan Show (Dramatic Three-Hour Show) event during the Japan International Contents Festival on Tuesday. According to Taguchi, Square Enix has made about 30 titles in the last eight years, but not a single one lost money for Square Enix. Taguchi began working at Enix at 1988, before it merged with Squaresoft to form his present employer. He is now responsible for the publishing, music, and advertising departments and is often credited for “planning” or as “executive producer” in anime.

Bakemonogatari Silently Conquers Japan

hitagi-pencil
Considering that this was a really low hyped series before the summer season began, it had taken people by surprise and quickly gained a foothold in the moe infested and diluted anime industry of Japan. Indeed, it might be down to it’s quirky cast, foot-in-mouth lines, random storyline that makes no sense until the very end, Senjougahara’s so called “Tore” appeal, or just plain over the top wackiness by Shinbo of SHAFT, but there is no denying, Bakemonogatari has shown you don’t have to follow the generic ways to succeed.
